Toys and Games to Introduce Kids to Coding

November 16, 2020 Education Technology

Kids benefit from hands-on experiences when learning how to code. When you can turn the activity into a game, the information retention improves.

Since coding is like learning a language, starting early can make this work feel like a natural communication tool. These toys and games can make that outcome happen.

1. Code-a-Pillar

This Fisher-Price toy offers eight segments with a symbol on the back. It shows an action or direction icon that directs a specific outcome. Although there isn’t a volume control, you can string sequence commands together to create instruction sets. Expansion packs are also available.

2. Sphero SPRK+

Equipped with Bluetooth and an inductive charger, this toy helps kids to learn coding by using a simplified programming language. It uses a block-based interface for commands, including real JavaScript. It comes with a waterproof design and tools to help build mazes and tracks that the product navigates through with its coding.

3. Dough Universe

If your kids like slime or Play-Doh, this toy provides a similar experience. It comes with conductive clay that lets little ones create simple circuits. They can shape them in whatever way they prefer to generate fun outcomes.

4. Koov

This Sony-based product uses cubes that look a little like a Tetris game. Each one uses actuators and sensors to build robots. It offers a lot of flexibility compared to other building sets with its separate CPU and battery units. The toy is one of the more expensive choices out there right now, but it also provides an excellent coding experience.

5. Robot Turtles

Intended for players 8 and under, this board game requires you to move a turtle to a jewel. You give it specific instructions to learn sequential coding, eventually earning a win when you complete your tasks successfully. Although it started in 2013 on Kickstarter, it’s still going strong because of its intuitive design.

Introducing kids to coding can be tons of fun. When you have these toys and games available, you can join the experience!
