3 Signs That Labor is 24 to 48 Hours Away
When your due date is closing in, it is normal to feel like every change in your body is a sign of labor. The thing is as the date approaches, some women experience numerous signs while others have no clue. If this is your first pregnancy, it is normal to be nervous about catching the signs of labor very early. Regardless, every woman’s body reacts differently and some signs are more subtle than others.
Here are some signs that your labor is 24 to 48 hours away.
1. Bloody show
As the cervix begins to open and dilate due to contractions, blood vessels can rupture. The blood show appears when a mucus-like substance is pink in color, has a blood streak, or looks brown. Noticing a bloody show means contractions will start to increase rapidly and labor is likely to occur in less than 48 hours.
Diarrhea is another sign that labor is getting closer. Days and hours before active labor starts, your body begins to prep itself. This preparation involves the release of hormones called prostaglandins. It prepares and dilates the cervix so it can respond to uterine contractions. Now, higher levels of prostaglandins can cause the digestive system to contract and make you lose your bowel movements. This ensures that there’s nothing in the way of your baby coming into the birth canal.
3. Water breaking
In movies and tv shows, water breaking (release of amniotic fluid) is how labor starts. But this is not the case for women. If you are at the later stage of your pregnancy, the time when your water breaks is a sign that labor is 24-48 hours away.
Other signs include labor contractions, back pain, and nausea. Please contact your doctor if and when you notice any changes or symptoms during your pregnancy.
