Common Computer-Related Injuries and How to Avoid Them
Technology access is changing lives in many positive ways. It can also become a literal pain in the neck when you’re not careful about how you sit and work in front of a computer.
Several common computer-related injuries are treated by doctors and chiropractors daily. Here are some of the typical issues they see and how you can avoid them.
This problem happens because of excessive curving at different parts of your spine. If you sit with rounded shoulders and your head forward, the injury can cause muscle tension, headaches, and joint dysfunction. You can prevent issues by switching to a postural relief position every 20 minutes.
With this injury, compression of the median nerve occurs as it passes through the wrist. It can cause abnormal finger sensations, night pain, clumsiness, and a weak grip. Your doctor might suggest physical therapy, surgery, or other options to find relief. If you want to prevent this injury, you’ll want to type with ergonomic supports that keep your hands in the correct position.
3. Tennis Elbow
If you work at a computer all day, you can develop lateral epicondylitis in the same way that tennis players encounter this issue. It creates pain at the forearm and elbow that often gets worse when moving your fingers. You’ll want to sit and type with appropriate supports, stretch your joints at least once per hour, and take the pressure off of these areas.
When you use a mouse frequently at the computer, the bracing and elevation required by the shoulder can cause muscle spasms and referred pain in the arm. If left untreated, it can damage your rotator cuff. Stretching, correct posture, and a relaxed grip can prevent many of these issues from occurring.
A computer-related injury can be as painful as anything an athlete experiences on the field. That’s why you must take care of yourself, get enough rest, eat healthily, and explore vitamins and supplements as needed.
