Protect Yourself from Falls During Cold Winter Weather

December 15, 2020 Health No Comments

Blankets of snow can look lovely outside. You step on your porch, coffee in hand, to take a deep breath of the cold, fresh air.

That’s when the ice outside causes your feet to slip. Before you know it, your body is on the ground, something aches, and you’re thankful the coffee wasn’t searing hot.

Falls happen more often in winter because of slippery conditions. These tips can help you stay on your feet!

Take Smaller Steps

It helps to shorten your stride when walking on icy ground. You’ll have fewer opportunities for weight displacement with this technique, especially if you’ve taken the time to stretch your muscles before heading outside.

Take Your Time

Don’t be in a rush when you’re walking outside during the winter. Even places that look to be safe could have a thin ice layer waiting to make you slip! If handrails are available, try to use them to support yourself.

Wear Better Shoes

Footwear with rubber soles works better in icy conditions than other shoe types. You might also consider picking up some gear that offers improved traction to manage these situations.

Work on Your Balance

If you spend 5-10 minutes working on balance exercises during your workout routine, you’ll notice more agility present when the ice tries to make you fall. Any improvement to your physical fitness supports a stronger core and more body awareness to prevent falls from happening.

Walk on Grassy Areas

If you see that ice could be a possibility for where you plan to walk, step off of the path to trudge through the grass. You’ll get more traction this way, and it significantly reduces the risk of falling.

Should you fall while walking on ice, try to avoid using your arms to protect against the impact. Your goal should be to roll with your momentum, trying to twist so that your movements are backward instead of forward.
